PharmTechX Certificate I: Leadership & Patient Care

Overview / Abstract:

Leadership & Patient Care is one of three interlinked certificate programs offered as part of the PharmTechX Program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Currently pending approval from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), this certificate provides coaching and skill development in patient management, interviewing, therapeutic monitoring, and medication reconciliation. Learners will gain valuable knowledge and skills related to accreditation and safety standards, as well as federal regulations, to ensure medication safety and compliance. The certificate’s leadership component also encourages the exploration and expansion of human resources and team management skills to help practicing pharmacy technicians achieve pharmacy operation objectives.

After completing this certificate, the learner should be able to:
- Demonstrate effective and appropriately empathetic interactions with patients;
- Interview patients to gain information on their medication history and allergies;
- Prepare accurate documentation for medication reconciliation and transitions of care, including identification of medication safety "Red Flags";
- Demonstrate leadership and collaboration related to pharmacy tasks and teams;
- Utilize federal regulatory requirements to evaluate medication safety processes and facilitate improvement; and
- Given patient examples, monitor laboratory values to assess "Red Flags" in drug dosing.
