Annual Harold C. Neu Symposium: Hot Topics in Infectious Diseases 2017

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

The field of infectious diseases has witnessed many changes in the approach to patient management that are being shaped by the expanding populations of immunocompromised patients, emerging and re-emerging pathogens and new conceptual frameworks to explain host pathogen interactions that are being guided by advances in diagnostic technologies and treatment strategies. Through presentations, internationally renowned faculty from across the United States will come together with NYC leaders in bench and clinical infectious diseases, pharmacology, and microbiology to explore and discuss emerging areas of interest in their fields. Participants will learn about emerging public health outbreaks, new diagnostic technologies, areas of prevention such as vaccine development and new treatment strategies for a host of bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be better able to:

•Evaluate for parasite diseases and understand treatment options.
•Recognize the special populations at risk for viral illness.
•Discuss current approaches to vaccine research.
•Identify public health threats, understand epidemiology and assist with reporting and monitoring of outbreaks.
