Overview / Abstract: |
Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis in the United States. Hyperuricemia/gout in patients with CKD constitutes a significant burden for patients and society. Patients who are not managed adequately experience painful gout attacks, loss of function and productivity, and may develop long-term complications. The economic burden is also increased from patient utilization of prescription medication use, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations from gout or its serious complications. Despite effective treatment for prevention, acute attacks, and tophi, and the availability of published treatment guidelines, there are significant gaps in treatment, patient communication, and clinical and economic outcomes for patients with hyperuricemia/gout and chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this CME Outfitters decision-tree medical simulation participants will navigate the clinical challenges presented by a patient with gout and chronic kidney disease. Along the way, expert faculty will provide guidance, insights, and evidence for the positive and negative consequences of their decisions. This actionable, evidence-based simulation will improve clinician confidence in their ability to recognize and assess patients with hyperuricemia or gout, improve coordination of care among healthcare providers, and develop personalized treatment plans for managing their patients. |
