Overview / Abstract: |
In this course participants will learn about effective strategies for providing collaborative services for students with autism and for those with challenging behavior. We will discuss evidenced based assessments for helping to get a better understanding of this learner’s overall communication skill set. In addition, we will focus on understanding the variety of communicative functions and why working on requesting for early learners is so very important for helping students acquire a functional way to communicate. In addition, a discussion of the functions of behavior will be discussed and strategies for working effectively with students demonstrating maladaptive behavior will be addressed. Strategies for helping students communicate how they are feeling, instead of using their behavior to communicate, will be a focus of the later part of the presentation. Real life pictures and videos will be used to illustrate these concepts for preschool through high school aged students. |
