This course, Home Modifications for People with Dementia, is one of a series of four courses made possible through a grant to I.D.E.A.S., Inc. through the National Institutes of Health. This course discusses home modification and how it relates to caregivers and people living in the household with dementia. Modifying the home environment to enhance safety, promote independence, and ease caregiving is increasingly recognized as an important strategy for dealing with dementia.

Acknowledgement: This module is supported by a grant from the Donald Reynolds Foundation. Dementia is an important diagnosis that is frequently missed until its later stages. In this module, clinicians will learn the proper diagnosis and treatment of patients presenting with memory loss, manage associated behavioral problems, recognize signs of elder abuse and familiarize themselves with physician responsibility and options related to unsafe elderly drivers.

The issues of delirium, depression and dementia in the older adult are involved and complicated. This presentation will discuss the incidence as well as the common characteristics of each. Assessment of the clinical symptoms, needed differentiation and assessments scales will be presented. The multidisciplinary needs of older adults will be emphasized.

Provides direct-care staff in nursing homes, hospice, and adult daycare with the skills, techniques, and strategies to care for residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia on a daily basis.
