Interventions in Ocular Surgery: Reducing Ocular Infection and Inflammation

Vindico Medical Education
Endophthalmitis is a rare but serious complication of ocular surgery. This monograph will review epidemiologic studies of changing susceptibility among pathogens encountered in routine ocular care. The use of antibiotics for the prevention of postoperative infection will be evaluated, along with the use of anti-inflammatory agents for the prophylaxis of postoperative cystoid macular edema. Strategies that are effective in the treatment of endophthalmitis will also be presented.

Basics of Bacterial Resistance

NetCE
Today, a generation of microbes has emerged that are so resistant to antibiotics that they might again become serious threats [1; 2]. Even the once easily treated organisms, such as staphylococcus and streptococcus, have acquired resistance to many standard antibiotics, making them much harder to treat. The urgency of this situation has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue guidelines that might help keep the situation under control, if universally followed. Th...

Clostridium difficile Infections: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention

AHRQ's Effective Health Care Program
Clostridium difficile infections (CDIs) are a growing health care problem in hospital, outpatient, and long-term care facilities. In 2005, approximately 250,000 hospitalizations were associated with CDI. While culturing and testing for toxin remains the gold standard for diagnosing CDI, the demands for rapid results have led many laboratories to rely on immunoassays that detect the presence of toxins in stool samples and, more recently, genetic tests that detect toxin-related genes. The effect...

The Ubiquitous Eye Infection: Appropriate Topical Antibiotic Use in Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Quintiles Medical Education
Bacterial conjunctivitis is a common condition that prompts patients to seek medical care. It is characterized by the acute onset of conjunctival injection and a purulent discharge that may be associated with pruritus. Although acute conjunctivitis is frequently a self-limiting infection, studies have shown that the use of topical antibiotics is associated with significantly improved rates of microbiological and clinical remission, hence accelerating resolution of ocular symptoms and recovery ...

Almost all children experience at least one ear infection during childhood. The decision to treat an AOM with oral antibiotics or to embark on a wait and see approach is not always straightforward. Multiple variables (patient's age, degree of illness, family's access to care) impact the decision-making process. The Management of Occular Inflammation Across Multiple Etiologies

Quintiles Medical Education
Eye inflammation involves the abnormal swelling of any ocular tissues. The condition can be the result of an exogenous insult, either iatrogenic or accidental, in addition to an endogenous source such as an autoimmune disease or pathogen. These insults cause disruption of the blood barrier and cellular infiltration, leading to intraocular inflammation. Two common causes of ocular inflammation are uveitis and cataract surgery. Uveitis is inflammation that occurs in the uveal tract of the ey...

There are a myriad of analgesic products sold over-the-counter in drug stores and supermarkets as nonprescription pain relievers. People experiencing dental pain are likely to self-medicate with these nonprescription pain relievers before seeing the dentist. In order for a drug product to achieve nonprescription status, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires it to be safe and effective. The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that were originally approved only as prescr...

Managing the Risks of Anticoagulant Therapy

Medical Interactive Community
Primary care physicians manage many of the patients on long term anticoagulant therapy. They perform a difficult balancing act on a daily basis, weighing each patient’s risk of thromboembolism versus hemorrhage. The preponderance of current medical literature identifies under-utilization of anticoagulants as a major problem, and cites the burden of frequent blood work and fear of bleeding as the reason for under-utilization. The Joint Commission has made reducing the risk of patient injuries...
